Aton is proud to be an EMERGENCY FRIEND, thanks to the technological support offered through .FoodHubber, an open-source web application. This tool is available to all food aid hubs, supporting the efficient management of essential goods distribution to vulnerable families in the Municipality of Milan.
About EMERGENCY
Founded in 1994 by Gino Strada, EMERGENCY is an NGO and non-profit organisation that provides free, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines and poverty.
In addition to its work in war-torn countries, EMERGENCY also operates in Italy, tackling poverty, social exclusion, mental health issues and access to rights, as well as responding to natural disasters.
Working Together
The collaboration between Aton and EMERGENCY was born thanks to an EMERGENCY volunteer who works closely with Aton. The idea was welcomed enthusiastically by the company’s board and employees, reflecting Aton’s DNA in creating innovative software solutions to integrate people and address complex situations – as already done for UN peacekeeping missions.
This partnership came to life with the social project No One Left Behind, which led to the creation of a solidarity and community supermarket at the Cuccagna Food Aid Hub in Milan. Designed and supported by the Food Policy of the Municipality of Milan, this space provides free, high-quality food to residents in need, while also fostering social interaction and sharing. The Hub was set up by EMERGENCY together with Associazione Consorzio Cantiere Cuccagna, Recup, Està – Economia e Sostenibilità, Associazione Comunità Il Gabbiano ODV, and Fondazione Acra.
.FoodHubber
The Cuccagna Hub is a place where project beneficiaries – and anyone in need – can find food, hygiene and household products, thanks to the recovery of local and large-scale retail food surplus.
.FoodHubber , released on GitHub as Free and Open Source Software, makes it possible to manage the entire process:
- identifying the profile and needs of the person coming to the Hub
- defining entitlements to access goods
- providing effective tools to “do the shopping”
- tracking the delivery of goods
In addition, .FoodHubber manages the stock of the food hub and provides tools to monitor the flow of goods, with statistics and replenishment.
