A provocation, of course\u2014but also a remarkably clear summary of the transformation we are going through. The AI revolution is not just about machines, data or algorithms: it\u2019s about people. And above all, about work.<\/p>\n

In every phase of technological disruption\u2014from the industrial revolution to the digital one\u2014change has produced two opposing effects: the disappearance of some professions and the emergence of others. The difference this time is the speed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Work in the age of AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If in the 20th century the world had decades to adapt to the automation of assembly lines, today the cycle is measured in just a few years. Chatbots<\/a>, predictive systems, collaborative robots and generative platforms are already reshaping human tasks across an unprecedented range of sectors.<\/p>\n

According to McKinsey, by 2030 around 30% of working hours in Western economies<\/strong> could be automated. That means millions of jobs will need to be reskilled, shifted or reinvented.<\/p>\n

The first roles to be affected won\u2019t be only those involving repetitive, low-value tasks, but also skilled professions: accountants, consultants, lawyers, translators, marketing professionals\u2014even financial analysts and digital experts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What will make the difference is the ability to learn. Today, the most urgent question is no longer \u201chow much will AI replace humans?\u201d, but \u201chow well will humans learn to use it and generate positive impact?\u201d.<\/p>\n

Anyone working in organisations\u2014whether in industry, services or the public sector\u2014feels a common reality: knowledge ages quickly and can harden into habits that limit growth. The real challenge is not technological, but educational and adaptive.<\/p>\n

To remain relevant in the labour market, it will no longer be enough to hold a qualification\u2014you will need to continuously update it. Hybrid skills will be essential: digital, but also humanistic; technical, yet capable of interpreting values and human relationships.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Artificial intelligence and work: how companies are trying to stay ahead of the wave<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, we can no longer assess a company\u2019s value solely through its financial performance. We need to ask what kind of work we create, where we create it, how we respect the environment, how much social value we give back to the community, and what we are leaving to future generations.<\/p>\n

Behind this perspective lies a message that goes beyond the rhetoric of innovation: the future of work will depend on our ability to humanise technology\u2014to turn it into a tool that improves quality of life rather than eroding it.<\/p>\n

Today, artificial intelligence is no longer a promise. It is already an operational engine driving the economy<\/strong>. We see it in logistics<\/a>, where algorithms optimise transport routes, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In retail<\/a>, where predictive systems anticipate purchase orders before they are even conceived. In industry<\/a>, where AI detects production defects invisible to the human eye, simulates better alternatives, creates prototypes and tests scenarios in real time. And across the world of digital services.<\/p>\n

How work is changing with AI across sectors<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Not all sectors will react in the same way. The roles most at risk are those that are repetitive and based on codified rules<\/strong>\u00a0– where AI can learn quickly.<\/p>\n

Among the first to be affected are administrative and accounting functions<\/strong>: document management, invoicing, and three-way matching<\/a> between order, delivery note and invoice are already being automated through machine learning systems. Customer service and call centres are also impacted, with advanced chatbots<\/a> now handling up to 70% of standard requests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Marketing and communication<\/strong> are evolving too: the automated generation of content, images and campaigns will significantly reduce operational workload. In the legal and insurance sectors<\/strong>, contract and clause analysis tools are already replacing junior roles.<\/p>\n

Finally, logistics and supply chain<\/strong><\/a>: transport planning and demand forecasting are increasingly driven by predictive AI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence and work: the new professions<\/h3>\n

But it\u2019s not all about job loss.<\/p>\n

At the same time, new roles will emerge: AI trainers, data ethicists, prompt designers, generative model analysts, and neural network maintenance specialists<\/strong>. Professions that are still taking shape today, but are likely to define the next decade.<\/p>\n

The question troubling economists and business leaders remains the same: how do we balance innovation with employment sustainability? The risk is that the digital revolution could widen the gap between those who have access to knowledge – and those who don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Skills and adaptability<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Those who today have technological skills and the ability to adapt will be at the centre of the new economy; those who lack them risk exclusion.<\/p>\n

This is the new \u201cdigital poverty line\u201d. In Italy, according to ISTAT, 40% of the workforce lacks basic digital skills<\/strong>. This means millions of people are in a condition of invisible but growing employment vulnerability.<\/p>\n

Hence the need for major investment in continuous learning – not only through corporate training, but also through public, free and accessible programmes, including for those currently outside the labour market.<\/p>\n

The company of the future will be a hybrid model, capable of combining automation and emotional intelligence, cloud and craftsmanship<\/strong>. True innovation is not only technological\u2014it is cultural. It starts with relationships, respect and the willingness to create value together.<\/p>\n

This approach helps explain why some Italian companies<\/a>, even smaller ones, are able to compete with global players: not because of computing power, but because of their ability to put people at the centre of innovation and problem-solving.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence and work: what are the risks?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is also a philosophical dimension<\/strong> worth exploring. Artificial intelligence, however powerful, has no purpose or morality. It is a neutral multiplier <\/strong>– amplifying both creativity and error, efficiency and inequality. Responsibility remains human.<\/p>\n

The real risk is not that AI becomes more intelligent than us, but that we stop being so.
Because if we delegate everything – judgement, decision-making, relationships – to machines, we risk losing the most valuable capability that defines us: the ability to give meaning to things.<\/p>\n

The Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Schumpeter<\/strong>, speaking about capitalism\u2019s \u201ccreative destruction\u201d, argued that every innovation brings with it the end of one world and the beginning of another.<\/p>\n

AI is doing exactly this: dismantling the logic of work as mere execution, and building a new one – based on knowledge, interpretation, responsibility and purpose.<\/p>\n

In the end, the future will not be decided by algorithms, but by the strategic and ethical choices of people and organisations.<\/p>\n

It will be a world where machines think faster than we do, but will never be able to love, desire, fear or hope. And it is precisely these emotions – imperfect, yet deeply human – that will continue to give us an evolutionary advantage.<\/p>\n
