{"id":75566,"date":"2024-06-27T17:09:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T15:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aton.com\/la-vita-del-designer-in-azienda\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T12:37:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T10:37:44","slug":"life-as-a-designer-in-a-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aton.com\/en\/life-as-a-designer-in-a-company\/","title":{"rendered":"Life as a designer in a company"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>How to win people\u2019s trust and design effectively<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A typical Monday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>morning stand-up with the sleepy faces of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/en\/design-thinking-journey-co-design-ux-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX colleagues<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>a quick recap of everything still waiting for answers \u2013 those brilliant interfaces just waiting for the thumbs-up from slightly worried devs;<\/li>\n<li>mock-up review that has to be ready ASAP \u2013 the requirements changed overnight, but nothing gets to us\u2026 we\u2019ll find the solution;<\/li>\n<li>a round of testing on the platform, fingers crossed because soon it\u2019s going into a client demo, and they can\u2019t wait to try out the much-dreamed-of export;<\/li>\n<li>and let\u2019s throw in the design of a quick slide for tomorrow\u2019s event too\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>all before lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, the role of <strong>the designer within digital companies is increasingly in demand<\/strong>, <strong>recognised and appreciated<\/strong>. But how can a designer integrate into such a fast-changing environment, even within a company with a long history, in an era of ever-shifting needs, without losing their way?<\/p>\n<p>I can share a little about how it works at Aton, with a <strong>semi-serious handbook<\/strong> that I hope might be useful for anyone who, like me, wants to survive yet another \u201c<em>The build doesn\u2019t build<\/em>\u201d without losing sight of their mission (love you, devs reading this \u2764).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Being a designer means evolving with the product ecosystem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-72568 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Well-done.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every <a href=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/en\/solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">product<\/a> a designer encounters in their working day has its own peculiarity. It can be studied and analysed by asking as many questions as possible, so that <strong>as the solution grows<\/strong>, <strong>they too can grow professionally<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThey must observe, put into practice what they have learnt, seen and read from previous projects with a critical eye \u2013 <strong>never stopping asking themselves: \u201cwhy is it like this?\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Switching<\/strong> between projects allows you to grow alongside them, learning how the main products are built and seeking ideas and inspiration from what already works. The vision, though creative, must remain <strong>focused on the product\u2019s goal<\/strong>, <strong>its growth<\/strong> and<strong> its target audience<\/strong>. The reassuring news is that we often don\u2019t need to invent anything new \u2013 the patterns already exist; we just need to adapt them to another context or look at them from a different angle.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: <strong>Don\u2019t lose sight of your goal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Speaking the stakeholders\u2019 language<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72565 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/meeting.png\" alt=\"Designer: parla con gli stackeholder\" width=\"599\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Put a salesperson, a technician and a creative in the same room, and you can be sure that one of them will walk out saying \u201cit can\u2019t be done\u201d. So how can we aim for the stars? By simply speaking the same language.<\/p>\n<p>The key to avoiding bruises from the clash with reality lies in <strong>patience,<\/strong> <strong>a pinch of adaptability<\/strong>, and <strong>clear rules of engagement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Involving all stakeholders from the very beginning of the project is essential for better communication and understanding of every perspective and constraint \u2013 even before launching that much-dreamed-of mock-up.<br \/>\nClear goals and deadlines for everyone, along with short, scheduled meetings, can make the prospect of collaboration easier and more appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: <strong>You won\u2019t get anywhere without openness to dialogue, feedback and questions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Designer: bring the mock-up to life!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72562 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/tasks.png\" alt=\"Designer: design system\" width=\"508\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not in the sense of a technical knock-out, but of making it as complete and real as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Every morning, a designer wakes up knowing they will have to design faster than the shifting urgencies between teams, and retrieve features that had been put on hold to give them new shine.<\/p>\n<p>Creating detailed mock-ups, solid documentation and interactive prototypes <strong>makes everything more tangible and effective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Investing the necessary time to clear up doubts and unforeseen issues that could arise later must be the priority \u2013 without giving in to the rush or the classic \u201clet\u2019s just release it as it is for now\u201d. It answers most doubts and objections, helps visualise the final product and understand the expected outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: <strong>If you don\u2019t draw it, you leave room for interpretations\u2026 and they\u2019re not always the ones we like<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Believe in one thing only: the design system<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72559 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/search.png\" alt=\"Designer: design system\" width=\"490\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As much as I may be good at contradicting myself and changing my mind, the <a href=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/en\/lets-talk-about-design-systems-devfest-venice-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">design system<\/a> will remain one of the few certainties in life \u2013 something I must adapt to despite my creative soul (I can almost sense consultants and colleagues moved to tears as they read these lines).<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be maintained, cared for and followed as closely as possible in order to create consistency and make the solution more <strong>coherent and user-friendly<\/strong>. Working in a team with the same set of components and rules makes the final result more efficient and effective \u2013 and keeps everyone happier.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Collaboration and cross-pollination for a happy designer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72556 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/collaboration.png\" alt=\"Designer: collaborazione\" width=\"456\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/collaboration.png 1848w, https:\/\/aton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/collaboration-1536x1030.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that digital transformation is both the output and the input of projects, the dreams of designers need <strong>all the development teams \u2013 and a few coffee breaks<\/strong> \u2013 to come true.<\/p>\n<p>How many times have we had an intuition just when we stepped away from the problem?
