On 16 October, World Food Day, EMERGENCY\u2019s solidarity supermarket<\/strong> was inaugurated at Cascina Cuccagna<\/a> in Milan.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a different kind of news for these digital pages; and while it is certainly a good thing, you might wonder \u2013 what\u2019s it doing here?<\/p>\n

Simple: it\u2019s very close to our hearts, because Aton is officially<\/strong> an EMERGENCY Friend<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

How Aton and EMERGENCY joined forces<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You probably already know EMERGENCY<\/strong> <\/a>and what it does. It is a non-profit organisation<\/strong> (ONLUS) and NGO<\/strong> founded in 1994 by Gino Strada to provide free, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines, and poverty. It is well known for its work in war-torn countries, but alongside this it also carries out effective \u2013 and perhaps less well-known \u2013 activities in Italy, addressing issues such as poverty, marginalisation, mental health problems, lack of access to rights, and the aftermath of natural disasters.<\/p>\n

Aton has been a Benefit Corporation<\/strong> since 2021<\/a>, and we are committed to sustainable digital transformation: People, Planet, and Prosperity<\/a> is our sustainability manifesto, a goal we pursue by applying technology to the people we are \u2013 our colleagues \u2013 to the people we serve \u2013 our clients \u2013 and to processes, making them more efficient. This commitment is well described in our impact assessment report<\/strong>, .<\/span>People<\/strong><\/a>, a document that brings together everything we care about.<\/p>\n

So, what connects Aton \u2013 a company providing digital solutions and services in the Retail, Fashion, CPG, and Energy sectors \u2013 with EMERGENCY, whose field of action is quite different?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take it step by step.<\/p>\n

Our first contact was about a year ago. Mariangela, our technology partner and an EMERGENCY volunteer, called Gianluca \u2013 Aton\u2019s Chief Sales Officer \u2013 to tell him about the need for a reliable partner to automate certain processes. The fact that this request came from a volunteer is very significant: anyone who knows EMERGENCY understands how important its volunteers are \u2013 in fact, they form the very heart of the organisation.<\/p>\n

We enthusiastically agreed, initially more as an intention than anything else. We certainly wanted to collaborate with them, but the question was: what could we actually do in practice<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Our app for EMERGENCY<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As is often the case in these situations, the intention turned out to be the key element: the contact, the enthusiasm, the decision to start talking. When there\u2019s genuine intent, it becomes easier to spot the common ground<\/strong> \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/p>\n

After all, what we do every day is identify needs, discuss them with our stakeholders, design solutions, and bring them to life; having the opportunity to put our passion for innovation at the service of the community<\/strong> was \u2013 and still is \u2013 a special opportunity.<\/p>\n

Through these discussions, we focused on one challenge in particular: EMERGENCY was about to launch a \u201csolidarity supermarket\u201d<\/strong> (what a point of convergence!) in collaboration with the Municipality<\/strong>\u00a0of Milan,<\/strong> as part of EMERGENCY\u2019s No one left behind project and the Municipality\u2019s Food Policy project<\/a>. In essence, it would be a place where beneficiaries of the initiative \u2013 and anyone in need \u2013 could find dry and fresh food, as well as hygiene and household products, free of charge, thanks also to the recovery of surplus food<\/strong> from the local fruit and vegetable supply chain and large-scale retail.<\/p>\n

Analysing the project, we identified the opportunity to develop an app for EMERGENCY<\/strong> capable of managing the process in detail:<\/p>\n
